MTA and Other Statewide Agreements

General Education Requirements 

Ƶ's General Education Requirements include the following: COMM-101 (Rhetoric and Writing); ECON-201 (Economic Principles); one 200-level elective each in Humanities and Social Science; one 300- or 400-level elective each in Humanities and Social Science; one additional 300- or 400-level Humanities OR Social Science elective; and LA-489 Senior Seminar (only available at Kettering). 

Community College Students: While advanced (300- and 400-level) Humanities and Social Science courses are not available at community colleges, transfer students will have satisfied COMM-101, two 200-level electives, and three advanced electives if they present a transcript from an accredited institution within the United States documented as having (one of these): 

  1. Satisfied the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA)

  2. Satisfied an Out-of-State Statewide Equivalency Agreement; or 

  3. Completed an associate's degree.

Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA)

The Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) was created in an effort to increase the transferability of core college courses between community colleges and four‐year colleges and universities.

Qualifying courses should be from the following categories:

  • One course in English Composition
  • A second course in English Composition or one course in Communications
  • One course in Mathematics from one of three pathways: Pathway to Calculus (includes College Algebra), Statistics or Quantitative Reasoning.
    • For students transferring to Ƶ, we recommend the Pathway to Calculus for all programs. Most majors at Kettering will require additional Calculus courses for graduation. Refer to our Academic Programs page for your specific program’s requirements.
  • Two courses in Natural Sciences including one with laboratory experience (from two disciplines).
    • For students transferring to Ƶ, we recommend both Natural Science courses include laboratory experience.
    • Most STEM majors at Ƶ will require Chemistry with a lab and Physics with a lab; Physics courses must be calculus-based.
  • Two courses in Humanities and Fine Arts (from two disciplines, excluding studio and performance classes).
  • Two courses in Social Sciences (from two disciplines).
    • Note: Complete Micro or Macro Economics as one of your Social Science courses to meet a Kettering graduation requirement.

Other Statewide Transfer Articulation Agreements

Out-of-state transfer students will have satisfied the following General Education requirements- COMM-101, two 200-level electives, and three advanced (300- and 400-level) electives- if they present a transcript from an accredited institution within the United States, documented as having satisfied a statewide transfer agreement. Examples include the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), the Indiana Transfer Single Articulation Pathways (TSAP), and the Ohio Transfer 36.

Earned Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degrees

Effective July 1, 2021:

Associate’s Degrees: Transfer students with an earned associate’s degree will have satisfied COMM-101, two 200-level electives, and three advanced electives if they present a transcript from an accredited institution within the United States documenting completion of an associate's degree.

Bachelor’s Degrees: Transfer students with an earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution within the United States will have satisfied the following General Education requirements: COMM-101, two 200-level electives, three advanced electives, and LS-489 if they present a transcript from an accredited institution within the United States documenting completion of a bachelor's degree.
